"You're off to great places!
One of the most common questions I am asked when photographing a family (or anyone for that matter) is, "where would be a good location for our shoot?". It's a good question, and a great location can have real impact on your session. But my answer is usually this... Find a location that means something to you! This might mean finding a place that has sentimental ties or some kind of nostalgia attached to it. Or it may be somewhere that is going to be practical for the kids; an open paddock with plenty of room to run, a garden or park with loads to explore... Or it could be something as simple as your own backyard! Sometimes the most simple of locations can create the most meaningful photographs. If you have children, think about what they like to do. Do they like to run, explore, play. Think of a location that will best suit you, your family and what you like to do as a family.
For me, my favourite photographs of my own family are ones that have been taken in my own home or at my their grandparents place. The home I grew up in has so many memories attached to it, so the idea of capturing new memories of my children in that very same spot, is just such a beautiful thought! It's probably not the first location that comes to mind, but if you are lucky enough to have parents that still live in your childhood home, it really does make for some very sentimental and very special photographs for yourself and your family.
