All too often I hear parents saying, "I'm so sorry, their not normally like this" as their child rapidly runs in the opposite direction of the camera. Because children are feral little beings, they tend not to listen, they also enjoy a hearty appetite for boogers, poop themselves (often) and have the attention span of a, well, a child! But thats ok. Because between all of these unsavoury habits that our children have, they sometimes do things that are really cute, funny, beautiful and just plain adorable. Thats where I come in. Its my job to entertain, distract and chase down your children (all with camera in hand) as they test out my endurance and fitness levels.
Sometimes it might seem as though your child was completely feral for the entire shoot. Perhaps you felt they were a little too hyped for their debut into the modelling scene. You know, the type of hyped up behaviour that makes them just do the weirdest of things. Like taking their shoes off and putting them on their hands, insisting that they have now transformed into some kind of human/animal hybrid. Or, perhaps you thought they were too distracted by the way their dress looked when they jumped up and down... consistently... for the ENTIRE shoot. Then, when you thought it couldn't get any worse, yep, along came the water works with a side of I'm-going-to-throw-the-worlds-biggest-tantrum-you-have-ever-seen-in-the-history-of-tantrum-throwing because Queen Elsa wasn't allowed to be in the shot too. Or maybe you thought your child was just plain feral during their shoot. So now you find yourself thinking, "Great, here I was, thinking that I had the perfect gift for Grandma for christmas (you're picturing that perfect shot of your precious little one sitting perfectly still, with that perfect smile, the most perfect outfit, with the most perfect hair-do) but instead, I'm not going to have one single usable shot!"
BUT, little do you know, that while your child has been running a complete muck for the last hour. I have been carefully framing up, anticipating and capturing all those beautiful in-between moments where your child is perfectly natural. Perfectly themselves. You can anticipate what you believe will be the perfect shot for as long as you like, but at the end of the day, the shots that make you smile and the shots that make you say "yep, thats my kid!" (and feel proud of it) are the ones that show their true personalities.
So its ok if your child is feral. Lets face it, most of them are. But there is definitely perfection within those feral moments that your child unveils at the most inopportune of times!
That all being said, out of all the children I photograph, my own are easily the hardest to capture. So heres a little look at a recent shoot I did with my girls. Sure, not every shots a winner, but hey, look at that personality right? Perfectly feral!,
